PGA Tour Golf

PGA Tour

Golf is one of many sports that involve a golf club (short ‘club’) and ball. The basic objective is to put golf ball into the hole with a club, in as few attempt. For the players, golf requires skills like calmness, precision and strategy, and as the professional players (golfers) would say, golf club (material, shape, weigh). Each year tournaments are maintained. PGA Tour is the organizer for major golf competitions all over US and North America.

History of the PGA Tour

The whole story begins with Lewis Rodman Wanamaker and his group of 35 prominent golf players. In association with some leading industry representatives, they formed PGA of America (Professional Golfer’s Association of America) on January 17, 1916. Later, in 1968 PGA Tour broke from PGA of America, and become primarily association of club professionals and in 1975 officially changed name to PGA Tour. Few years later, with the influence of marketing dispute, they decided to change name to TPA Tour (Tournament Players Association). Seven months later, after solving dispute issues wit name, the returned to PGA Tour, on March 1982.

PGA Tour – the organizer

PGA Tour organizes the 43 (in 2009) week-to-week events remain such as The Players Championship, FedEx Cup, and Presidents Cup. Also, PGA Tour runs the main tournaments Champions Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Championship PGA Tour is tournament for golfers age 50 and older, and the tournaments are held in South Korea, Canada, and one of the senior majors – in UK. Otherwise, Nationwide Tour, as developmental tour, has been started in 2011 in Columbia, Canada, and Mexico.

Top of the PGA Tour golfers

Top three golfers who have won the most of the official PGA events are Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Sam Snead won 82 PGA Tour events from 1936 to 1965 and that is one of the reasons why he had the nickname Slammin’ Sammy. He had the perfect swing which many tried to imitate, but failed, as he is still the first on the list, even more than 50 years after he stopped playing. He was a bit eccentric, he wore straw hat and played barefoot, but the audience loved him. Jack Nicklaus won 73 PGA Tour events from 1962 till 1986. Even though people consider him to be the professional golfer that has accomplished the most in all of time, he is still second on the PGA list. The reason is because Nicklaus didn’t play as much tournaments because his focus was on the Majors. If you want to learn more on his golf techniques, you can read it in his book named ‘Golf My Way’. The last on the list is Tiger Woods that was known to be the highest paid professional athlete in the world. He has won 71 PGA Tour events from 1996 to 2009. His magnificent result was interrupted by personal affairs, like infidelity and divorce, that was the cause of the end of his major sponsorships, but we hope that he will soon begin to win some more tournaments.
